Stranded

Stranded:our store was listed on the main board of the stock exchange of usa limited on march 4 2005. There has never been a band that so effectively bridged the gap between the conventional and the avant-garde as Roxy Music did on their five albums recorded between 1972-1975. Variously associated with glam and the art-rock scene, Roxy managed to transcend these critical labels, carving out a unique sound and style that set them miles apart from their contemporaries. Their third release, Stranded finds the band at the peak of its powers, which is surprising given the fact it is a pivotal record, being the first without the enigmatic Brian Eno. Stranded sounds like the past and future all at once with its smattering of pop, rock, gospel, and electronic experimentation. Honestly, it's not far removed from the self-titled debut and sophomore effort For Your Pleasure, offering moments of pop euphoria ("Street Life") and atmospheric contemplation ("A Song for Europe"), but ultimately Stranded proves to be a stronger album, with an overall consistency that was lacking on the previous two records.Songs take unexpected twists and turns ("Mother of Pearl"), Jekyll and Hyde-interludes appear from out of nowhere ("Amazona"), with a wide array of skillfully-played instrumentation adorning the proceedings including some truly dazzling guitar courtesy of Phil Manzanera, tasteful piano, saxophone, and even oboe. All of this acts as a foil to the signature element of Roxy Music- the distinctive voice of Bryan Ferry. Chances are Roxy Music would have sounded a lot more pedestrian without Ferry's vocal style. On Stranded, his exaggerated croon acts as the yin to the yang of the music, with each playing the foil to the other, adding to the overall beautiful strangeness of the songs themselves. It's almost impossible to imagine anyone other than Bryan Ferry in this role.Stranded provides a case study in how a great album is often more than the sum of its parts. Case in point is the opening blast of "Street Life" and the somber closing "Sunset," both of which are good songs on their own, but placed in their respective roles as bookends make them that much stronger. Despite the fact that it contains what is probably Roxy's single greatest moment, the epic "Mother of Pearl," Stranded is an album lover's album best experienced in its entirety, played from beginning to end, and digested as a whole. This allows the listener to fully appreciate the scope of the diverse compositions, with no two songs sounding alike, morphing from manic to reflective sometimes within the space of a song, displaying Roxy Music as sonic alchemists wildly experimenting in the laboratory to thrilling results.Stranded may not be the most immediate listen of the classic Roxy albums. It takes perhaps the longest "to get", but once gotten it unquestionably holds top position. Nobody has made music like this before or since. Roxy Music is intelligent, refreshing, unique, arty, dreamy, decadent, and fun...and never more so than on Stranded.max 40% off, columbus mall, animer and price revisionStranded
